According to Liberia’s Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper, the country’s health sector is in dire straits. Only 41% of the population has access to any healthcare facility. Over 90% of the country’s health facilities were destroyed during the period of social upheaval.
Most healthcare workers left the country during the period of instability. Today there are only 43 doctors and 21 nurse midwives to cover the entire public health sector. Child and infant mortality are estimated at 157 and 235 per 1,000 live births. This is among the worst in the world. HIV prevalence rate now stands at 5.2% and indications are that this rate may increase unless there is substantial public health education. All health indicators of Liberia rank among the lowest in the world. For more
