According to Liberia’s Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper, about 70% of the country’s educational facilities were totally or partially destroyed during the years of social upheaval. Over 50% of children are estimated to be out of school. Only 35% of boys and 27% of girls stay in school beyond the fifth grade. There has been a general decline in education for several years. Many of the Teacher Training Institutions that trained high school graduates to become teachers prior to the war are only beginning to be rebuilt and re-staffed.
